Sexual Assault

Zhenhao Zou

28-year-old UCL student Zhenhao Zou was convicted today of 28 offences, including 11 counts of rape against 10 different women, following a five week trial.

While in China in November 2020 Zou, also known as “Pakho”, downloaded an “instruction manual” on how to drug and rape young women, with the words “effects guaranteed” displayed across pictures of unconscious, naked women. He then used butanediol (a GHB precursor) to drug a number of women and rape them. Police believe there may be more than 50 victims, and have appealed to anyone who believes they may have been assaulted by Zou to contact them (details provided at the bottom of this post). They are particularly focussed on women from the Chinese community, who appear to have been targeted by Zou.

Police were able to find footage of Zou’s attacks in part through the four spy cameras he had installed in his £4,000 a month luxury flat.

Seven of his 10 victims were attacked in China, and have not yet been identified. They were referred to in court as Females B, C, D, E, F, G, and H. The BBC reports that “Five of the women looked completely unconscious in the videos. One, Female G, appeared to wake briefly while Zou was raping her, but struggled to maintain consciousness. Female H could be heard snoring. Another woman, Female D, was unconscious when the rape began but came round and repeatedly told Zou “please, no”, while trying to fight him off.”

Videos of three women raped by Zou in London – referred to as Female A, who has not been identified, and Ms N and Ms L, who testified against him – were shown in court. Female A could be heard “pleading” with Zou to stop, and saying “I hate you”. He responded “It’s pointless. The sound insulation here is very good.”

Ms N reported being raped shortly after it occurred, but said she was discouraged by an inaccurate translation of her 999 call. Despite this mistake by the Metropolitan Police, she bravely posted about her ordeal on RedNote – where Ms L saw it and contacted her, enabling the police to identify her as another of Zou’s victims.
